Firefox gives a heads-up to rivals with Beta of 3.1
October 19, 2008 – 11:54 pm | by SteveIf you have been keeping up with the browser news (and they have been generating a lot of hype lately), you might recall that Firefox 3 was one of the fastest page loading browser available at the moment. Others, such as Apple Safari and Opera with their latest versions were close behind. IE 7 is trailing in the dust. Well that’s about to change, somewhat anyways.

Well, if you switched to Firefox thinking it would be the fastest browser around, you’re in luck. The latest beta version released of the upcoming Firefox 3.1 browser was tested against various browsers for page loading times using Acid 3, the SunSpider Java benchmarking test and 3D Java rendering test and it was simply better than anything else. Keep in mind though that this was only with regards to loading times.

Other changes include a shortcut key of Ctrl+Tab added for quick changing of tabs. Also you can drag a tab from one window to another of Firefox. Some changes in the Awesome bar have also been made that allow you to limit searches to bookmarks or history or tagged pages.
There are some known issues and Mozilla has warned that plug-ins and addons for Firefox 3 might not work with Firefox 3.1. Additionally there might be some security issues as well but these will in all likelihood be resolved before the final version is released.
